Chief Executive Officer
Dr.
Mangino is Chief Executive Officer of Sion Power. Prior to
joining Sion Power, Mangino served as President and CEO of NSF
International, a global leader in testing, product certification, ISO-9000
registration and standards development. Under his leadership,
NSF experienced a fivefold growth in revenue while broadening
services provided to companies operating in 85
countries.Earlier, Mangino held executive positions with BP America, Inc.,
Weirton Steel Corp., PPG industries and EniChem America, Inc.
where his responsibilities included strategic planning, mergers
and acquisitions, quality systems management and general
management of both commodity and high technology based businesses. He has
extensive international experience in the areas of technology licensing and
business partner development. Mangino received his B.S and Ph.D.
degrees in ceramic engineering and ceramic science,
respectively, from Rutgers University. He also completed the
Program for Management Development at the Harvard Business School.
Chief
Technical Officer
Dr. Affinito has been developing vacuum deposition processes and thin film based product applications for 25 years. He is presently leading Sion Power’s development of a fully vacuum deposited Li anode with integral multi-layer stabilization coatings. As Vice President of Spectrum Polytronics John successfully led both the process R&D and prototype manufacturing for a fully vacuum deposited multi-layer capacitor product. At Pacific Northwest National Laboratory John won both an R&D 100 Award for a new manufacturing process for polymer electrolytes and the Federal Laboratory Consortium Award for Technology Transfer for development of Li battery technology under contract to Sion’s predecessor Moltech Corporation. For other companies Dr. Affinito has developed vacuum deposition based products and patented processes ranging from stealth technology (radar, microwave, IR and optical signature control), energy conserving window films, color-shift pigments for security coatings, a variety of optical coatings and ultra-barrier technology for flat panel displays. John has 48 journal publications, 26 issued U.S. patents, 14 pending U.S. patents, many Foreign patents pending and issued and he has given numerous invited presentations at technical conferences and corporations. John has B.Sc. degrees in both Chemistry and Physics from Lawrence Technological University, an M.Sc. in Solid State/Nuclear Physics from Wayne State University and a Ph.D. in Solid State/Thin Film Physics from the University of British Columbia.
Vice
President Product Safety
As
Sion Power's Vice President for Product Safety, Dr. Doughty will oversee all
programs related to product safety of high energy, rechargeable lithium
sulfur batteries. Prior to joining Sion Power, Doughty managed the Advanced
Power Source Research and Development Department, Sandia National
Laboratories in Albuquerque, New Mexico. Doughty has 14 years experience in
battery research, development and production of batteries and capacitors for
defense and energy applications. He has contributed to understanding and
improving safety and abuse tolerance of batteries from a fundamental and
practical level. Dr. Doughty was instrumental in developing test methods
and standards that characterize the response of energy storage devices to
abusive conditions and led Sandia’s experimental effort to evaluate the
response of many types of batteries and capacitors for the US Department of
Energy and automotive companies. Dan holds a Ph. D. in Inorganic Chemistry
from the University of Minnesota. He received the DOE Award for Excellence
in 1989, has over 90 publications, 4 patents, and has co-edited four
technical proceedings volumes.
Director
of Commercial Operations
John
Kopera is Director of Commercial Operations where he is responsible for the
sales, marketing and battery product development activities. He has over 15
years of experience in developing systems and technology for high
performance batteries. John previously served as Director - Stationary
Solutions for Cobasys, developing nickel metal hydride battery systems for
stationary power applications. Prior to Cobasys, he was with Exide
Corporation as Director of Product Development for Emerging Technologies,
where he was responsible for developing new technologies for energy storage.
Previous to Exide he was with DaimlerChrysler where he held increasingly
responsible roles for engineering of alternative fuel vehicle systems and
electric vehicles. He was a key contributor to the battery and propulsion
systems for the DaimlerChrysler TEVan and EPIC electric vehicles. John is
the inventor or co-inventor on over nine alternative fuel, battery
management and electronics patents. He received his Bachelor of Science
degree in electrical engineering from Michigan Technological University, and
his Master of Science in electrical engineering from Oakland University.
John is also a graduate of the Chrysler Institute of Engineering.
