About Us

Sion Power is a privately owned company that began as a spin-off from Brookhaven National Laboratory in 1989 as Moltech, which focused its efforts on research and development. Since then, the company has grown, attracting an impressive group of scientists, engineers, and partners who relentlessly developed the technology needed to reach the next generation of rechargeable battery technology.

Today the company consists of over 100 employees, many of whom have Ph.D.’s. This impressive group of individuals has acquired over 470 international patents and patent applications. The company’s 67,000 square foot production and R&D facility include a dry room for fabrication as well as test, analytical/materials, and electronic assembly labs. In addition, the company completed a 5,300 square foot battery test facility.

Years of research and development have yielded the Licerion® lithium metal technology, which is poised to dramatically change the lithium battery landscape, delivering the highest combination of energy density and specific energy available.

Tracy Kelley has been with Sion Power for 20 years. He has served as CEO for the past three years and has held various positions previously at the company, including CTO for five years. Before joining Sion Power, Tracy worked for Valence Technology, a developer of lithium-ion batteries.

Mack has over 30 years of experience in senior management positions, with a specific focus on successfully scaling young companies into dominant market positions. Prior to joining Sion Power, Mack served as the Chief Financial Officer and Chief Strategy Officer at EOS Energy Storage (“Eos”).  Prior to Eos, Mack served as the Chief Executive Officer for Viridity Energy from 2012 to 2019 and was also the Chief Financial Officer for Viridity. He has a B.S. in Finance and Marketing from the University of Virginia and an MBA in International Finance from Widener University.

As CTO of Sion Power, Carlos Restrepo oversees everything from the core electrochemistry to the incorporation of cells into application-specific battery packs. Restrepo has more than 20 years of technology experience in a variety of industries with a focus on energy storage within the solar market. Before joining Sion Power, he was the CTO for Eos Energy Enterprises, a developer of zinc aquos battery technologies, where he led the Innovation, R&D, Engineering, and IT.

Andrew Kankula is the Vice President of Business Development. He has 25+ years of experience bringing meaningful change in diverse global markets and industries. Andy is a recognized thought leader for his operational and commercial success in EV components and automotive supply, commercial vehicles, specialty chemicals and technology related industries. Previously, he was the Sr. Vice President of Specialty Membrane Solutions and Corporate Business Development at Polypore, a subsidiary of Asahi Kasei. He also led the Auto Catalyst Division at Umicore across geographies and was the Sr. Vice President of Marketing and Sales at Volvo Bus Corporation, where he doubled sales in only two years. Andy earned an MBA in Finance and Management from The University of Detroit and a BS in Psychology, Labor Relations and Economics from Michigan State University.

Stefan Jacoby, past president of General Motors’ international operations, is a senior consultant who works with leading companies on overall strategy, market position and growth. He has worked and lived in Europe, Asia and the United States. With more than three decades of experience in the automotive industry, he has recently been a key player in the transformative move to autonomous and electrified vehicles. He built a reputation for identifying and creating strategic vision and direction combined with consistent operational implementation. He has a unique perspective on market growth through experience in finance, sales and marketing.  Jacoby recently held the position of president of General Motors International Operations, where he led the transformation and consolidation of the Asian market. Prior to GM, he was global CEO of Volvo Car Group and was CEO of Volkswagen Group of America. Accomplishments include increasing profitability, streamlining business structures and negotiating strategic alliances.  Jacoby has served on international boards of GM, Volvo and Volkswagen and has served the supervisory board of LeasePlan in the Netherlands. Jacoby was also chairman of the Auto Alliance in Washington, DC.

Jim Simmons

James Simons is chairman of the Simons Foundation and board chair and founder of Renaissance Technologies. Prior to his financial career, Simons was chairman of the mathematics department at Stony Brook University, taught mathematics at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT) and Harvard University, and was a cryptanalyst at the Institute for Defense Analyses. Simons holds a B.S. from MIT and a Ph.D. from the University of California, Berkeley. In 1976, he won the Veblen Prize of the American Mathematics Society for his work in geometry. He is a trustee of the Stony Brook Foundation, Rockefeller University, MIT, Brookhaven National Laboratory, the Mathematics Sciences Research Institute, New York Genome Center, the Science Philanthropy Alliance, and the Institute for Advanced Study, and is a member of the National Academy of Sciences, the American Academy of Arts and Sciences and the American Philosophical Society.

Gaurav Ahluwalia is Managing Director, Venture and Direct Investments at Euclidean Capital, based in New York City. Prior to joining Euclidean, he was a Principal at KKR & Co. He has also worked for TPG (Growth) and Morgan Stanley. Gaurav has an MBA from Harvard Business School and a B.A. in Mathematics and Economics from Macalester College.

Scott is a Founding Partner at Innovation Endeavors and a four-time entrepreneur. He co-founded three publicly-traded tech companies and is a board member at some of the most ambitious startups in tech. In his role as an investor, Scott looks to partner with entrepreneurs that are leveraging breakthrough technologies to disrupt and transform industries.

Scott led investments in and sits on the board of: Replica, a next-generation urban planning tool that can help cities answer key transportation and land use questions; Plenty, which is driving the super evolution of the $3-trillion-dollar agriculture industry with indoor farms that are powered by machine learning, data science, and automation; Afresh, which reduces food waste and increases access to nutritious food globally by transforming the fresh food supply chain; and Citrine Informatics, which uses AI and massive data sets to accelerate materials discovery and product development.

Prior to joining Innovation Endeavors, Scott was CEO and co-founder of Slice; Co-Founder and CEO of FiberTower; Co-Founder and CTO of Clarus Corporation, and Co-Founder and CTO of SQLFinancials.

Scott is the MBA Class of 1978 Lecturer in Management for 2022-2023 at the Stanford Graduate School of Business, where he teaches in the Center for Entrepreneurial Studies. Additionally, he spent nine years on the GSB Advisory Council and served as the Chairman of the MSx board for 13 years. He was recently awarded the 2022 MSx Teaching Excellence Award and the 2023 Jack McDonald Military Service Appreciation Award.

Scott earned a Masters in Management from the Stanford Graduate School of Business and a bachelor’s degree in business administration from the University of Florida with high honors. He received the University of Florida, Distinguished Alumni Entrepreneur Award in 2016. He holds multiple software and technology patents.

Robert McIntyre is a Managing Director at LG Technology Ventures and has over twenty years of experience as an investor, entrepreneur, and advisor with technology start-ups in Silicon Valley. Prior to LG, Robert was Partner at CMEA Ventures, VP of Business Development at NextBio (acquired by Illumina), and an investor at H.I.G. Capital. Robert holds a B.S. degree in Chemical Engineering from MIT and an MBA from the Wharton School.

Tracy Kelley was assigned Chief Executive Officer July 10, 2017 with over 17 years of battery experience in lithium based battery systems. Tracy previous served as a research scientist at Valence Technology, a developer of lithium polymer batteries for portable applications, heading their failure analysis department. Tracy holds several patents in the area of active cathode materials and battery processing. He attended the University of Alabama majoring in Chemistry and Philosophy.
